Miriam: Talk to me a bit about the word youth. What does it mean to do with respect to the two projects you’re working on, and also with respect to your work as a media trainer.
Kate:
For me, youth is not – it’s a buzz word. It doesn’t mean something specific, I guess. Technically, it’s people within the ages of 12 to 25, 12 to 35, I guess. For me, the idea youth is someone who is active, and people who still have the inspiration to go to protests, and go out and try and change the world – so someone who has an idea about bettering off the world, and doesn’t have the cynicism and the feeling of, “Oh, I can’t do it anymore – I’m just going to leave that for the other people”.
Miriam: Do you think that young people themselves made up the term ‘youth’, or do you think it was made up about them, to describe the kind of thing that people have noticed?
Kate:
Youth would probably come from an older group trying to define a younger group, because it doesn’t sound very much like a young word. [I’m not going to come up] with just the way that it sounds, but I have a feeling it was a word that always existed, and then it just got labeled onto a specific group of people.
