Kate: Why Media?

Transcript:

Miriam: Why is media literacy and media production training so important?

Kate:

Media literacy and media training is important because it is the way of our generation now – not to say that books and drawings have gone out of style, cause they haven’t – they’re actually coming right back in. It is important because it gives a medium that is attainable by huge groups of people. So, suddenly, they can make a little film, and it can be on YouTube and all of their friends can see it. They can be sent off to thousands of unknown viewers, or it can be showed in their school, or it can be shown in various different capacities. It reaches a much wider audience than say, putting together a little ‘zine, or something else that is more low-key.

Miriam: And for you as teacher, why do you think training people as opposed to just making media?

Kate:

I think it’s important to train people to make media themselves is because I’m a big fan of people learning how to do projects themselves. If someone who tells you what to do, or they do it for you, then you don’t really learn how to do something. In any medium, one should try to do it themselves.
