Kate: My name is Kate Lavut.

Miriam: And tell me about the project that you work for.

Kate:

I worked with the Atwater Library Digital Literacy Project. My role is a film facilitator. What that means is I taught a workshop with youth in order for them to develop some basic film knowledge, and for them to come up with a little short film and make it themselves.

Miriam: Okay, and you worked with two different groups, right?

Kate:

I worked with two different groups. The first group that I worked with were high school students from James Lyng high school. They had a much more hands-on approach with the video. They got behind the camera; they worked with script; they acted in it, and I was really just a facilitator who oversaw everything and gave them technical advice here and there – and I did the editing for them. They really made the project themselves, and I think that was really fulfilling for them; to do that.

The second group that I worked with was the Sense project at Head & Hands, and that was a group of also high school students from various High schools. Their group was a little less – well quite a lot less – hands on, actually, because we only had one day together, which was different from the first workshop where we’d been together weeks and weeks. Within that one day, it turned out that I did most of the filming and the editing, and they did the acting and the scriptwriting. It was a different sort of project, but it was still awesome.
