Miriam: And are students very vocal about their appreciation or lack of appreciation for things?

Allannah:

Some of the things that they've done have been very very popular, and sometimes one project will lead to another. For example, the people who did the hip-hop literacy also took over the talent show because at the end of the hip-hop program these people were going to perform what they had generated in their creative assignments so it just seemed like a natural fit, so that gave them the opportunity to be extremely valuable to the whole student population who wanted to be involved in the talent show. So one thing leads to another, and when it takes on it's own life and the students become more involved that's when they really wanna have it back.

Miriam: Do you think, I spoke for quite a while with Neil from literacy through hip -hop about this idea of student motivation, and we were talking a lot about how do you motivate students and how do you get them coming back and then I asked Crystal also about this: "If you could have done the video project and gotten a mark would that have changed how you felt about this thing?" So how do you think that a student’s perception of the community learning part of their life would change if they were suddenly getting marks for everything from English to community learning?

Allannah:

For myself I don't think that the mark is the greatest motivator. I think that it's an add-on, but I think the project itself has to be attractive. Kids have participated in afterschool projects since the beginning of time without getting many credit for it. If they enjoyed it, if they saw a purpose to it, if they saw it as something that was going to help them later on in life it wouldn't necessarily have to be a mark. I think there's a bit of a danger too in assigning a mark or a credit to everything, because then people will only do things if they are getting rewarded, in life there's gotta be something you do just because it's fun, because it engages you, because you want to do it. It's like paying kids for household chores, eventually they'll only do them if they get paid, this isn't a good thing.
