Marlo: Becoming An Ally
'I guess it runs in the family because I remember my grandmother. We were talking to her about would she like to go into a home because she was starting to lose certain functions, and it was getting more challenging for her and the family, and she said, “Why would I want to go in those places? They’re full of old people.”'
Marlo: Difficult Partnerships
"We were told that we were being damaging to these youth because we weren’t telling them that they shouldn’t be expressing their rage at the police in this way. That they should be told that they should walk into the police station and ask for a reconciliation options and what-not. And who are we to tell youth what their therapeutic process is or what their process of rage and healing is."
Matt: Leadership and Ambivalence
"I think it's that I have this fear of hurting um teen-agers. I think it's because I was yelled at all the time when I was a teen-ager, and um I really hated it and thought it was ineffective and I don't want to be that person who yells at them, even though I feel like need to get yelled at sometimes."
Matt: Motivation and Influence
"I think they were intrigued by public service announcements when they saw the ad council videos that we showed them in the course. After that I think their motivation was they were just trying to do what we wanted them to do."
Matt: Youth and Censorship
"So the big difference is basically youth, in designing a class the materials I would bring to a class devoted to youth wouldn't be nearly the same as something I would bring to a class devoted to young adults because I wouldn't show most youth human rights videos, because there is material in there that's just really inappropriate."
